I know a boy who created an entirely new kind of crystal. I know a girl who made a New Year's resolution to send more death threats. I know a boy who is so full of metal that he makes machines go crazy.
There are many long over-due photographs of my time spent in Tanzania. These are a choice few taken whilst on safari at Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater, August 2010. We watched hippos appear and disappear like sinking islands in the water, saw a family of warthogs racing along the lake's shore, scalded dipped fingers in hot springs, rode jeeps standing up, stopped to let baboons cross the road, broke down next to a sleeping lion and wondered if car failure would lead to our grisly deaths, had Mexican stand-offs with vervet monkeys, got dirty and dusty and burnt and enjoyed the most amazing time.
A day of driving and Dylan, sunshine and sustenance, farm life and friends, catching up and castles in the air, Greek myths and good company, laughter and love love love!
Lunar sunrises, stellar curries and miracles in space. 13th birthday parties and virgin cocktails that taste like ice cream sundaes. Candy painted nails that draw blood like cat claws, and cat hair all over my clothes. Sinking back into old books like into a bed that remembers your sleeping shape exactly. The heartache of spring fever Mark Twain understood so well, the wisdom of Nelson Mandela that no number of cutting teeth will bring me, and the fullness of everything around me.

One of my favourite people on earth went on an adventure to Iceland. She saw some wonders of this world of ours and made a new friend. I love that everyone is being bitten by the travel bug; we all have so much to tell nowadays.
Let my shadow disappear into yours Let me lose myself under the tall trees that themselves lose their crowns in the twilight, surrendering themselves to the sky and the night.

I love you as certain dark things are to be loved, in secret, between the shadow and the soul. I love you as the plant that never blooms but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers; thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance, risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body.
There are many days of new year for me and many days when the year feels new; 1st September, 31st October and 1st January...Tonight is the recognised date in 21st century England, when the year's hourglass is turned upside down to start again. It is the one given to me from birth with countdowns, clock chimes and fireworks. I realise, year of the ox, that you officially end on 14th February, but I can't help but fit my Westernised calendar around you.
You have been trying and a tribulation, a blessing and a curse, offered salty crying and sweet celebration, made me wonder what could be missing and what on earth could be worse. Regardless, you have seen me through some things that have moved and shaped me and I am grateful. However, you are over and I am not, so this is goodbye.
I won't miss you. We might meet again and when we do, I will eat roast beef with horseradish and mashed potatoes, and pretend to plough fields whilst wearing leather and drinking milk. Until then, I promise to remember you, and to grab life by the horns with both hands.
Yours, Fiona

Happy New Year everyone! May the next decade be everything you wish it to be.
My flatmates and I are sitting down and thinking very hard about one day, possibly, having a cat. It is proving quite difficult not to get carried away...
